BUG: upgrade fails for gnome-applets, others, also installed under fink

When I try to upgrade gnome-applets, gnome-session or gnome-terminal nothing is printed. (e.g. Not even the "Fetching ..." line appears.) The process (tclsh) coutinues to consume cpu cycles and virtual memory, until, when left overnight, my hard disk runs out of space due to VM usage. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.5.

I also have older versions of these three packages installed under fink. In both cases the packages were installed as an indirect result of installing other packages.

Please attempt the upgrade using the following command:

sudo port -dv upgrade gnome-applets > ~/gnome-applets.upgrade.log 2>&1 sudo port -dv upgrade gnome-session > ~/gnome-session.upgrade.log 2>&1 sudo port -dv upgrade gnome-terminal > ~/gnome-terminal.upgrade.log 2>&1

and once those processes are complete (it may take a while), attach the logs to this bug.

(From update of attachment 6664) I ran the first command for just over 15 minutes and it produced a 692 K log, but no output in the terminal window. I sorted a copy of this and a lot of stuff is being done over and over again.

If you want me to run the other two commands, I can.

I am enclosing one file you did not request: gnome-applets.txt, which was generated by

locate gnome-applets

At the end of the file you will see some fink files in /sw/fink/...

I can provide you with more information if you wish. In fact, it appears that I can provide you with an infinite amount, as long as you don't mind waiting for it to be produced. :-)

That said, there is a faster work-around for you:

sudo port -f uninstall gnome-applets ; sudo port clean --all gnome-applets ; sudo port install gnome-applets

That command will uninstall gnome-applets, throw any garbage the port may have left around during the aborted upgrade process away, and then install the port. I sometimes resort to this trick when an upgrade seems to act strange as well. ...

The quick fix (on a different copy of the same system) didn't work either:

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GDU_MODULE_VERSION_CHECK_CFLAGS and GDU_MODULE_VERSION_CHECK_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Use sudo "port -f install gnome-doc-utils" There are a number of ports that trigger scrollkeeper-update. Hunting them down and fixing them seems to be a never-ending task. The above command should get you through that problem without having to wait on the port to be fixed.
