I am aware of this ticket, but I need to do some research and testing first. It was attempted once before to upgrade freetype, from 2.1.10 to 2.2.1, and as I recall this caused massive breakage and we had to downgrade back to 2.1.10. I don't want the same breakage to happen now, so I need to research what the specific breakage was.
I am also aware that freetype 2.3.2 now exists, however I get a weird error during configuration so I am inclined not to upgrade to that version at all.

pipping updated the port to 2.3.2. I am still trying to research what problems were encountered last time when the port was upgraded to 2.2.10.
