And this took more than 24hours, but did not complete.
I am using macports 1.7.0 rev. 42398

Looks like the port is at least missing a dependency on automake. Do you have automake installed? If not, does installing it first help?

Is it active? Note that port list doesn't do what you really want here; try port installed automake.
