Without fink's patch here: ​http://wh0rd.org/fink/finkinfo/10.4/unstable/main/finkinfo/x11/mlterm.patch . I get the above message when trying to start un-antialised mlterm.

Both with the patch and without it, I get a separate error when trying to start an antialiased mlterm (--aa): 

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host ?????????????????
        (p(?(x(????
XIO:  fatal IO error 22 (Unknown error: 0) on X server ":0.0"
      after 12 requests (9 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

​http://lists.apple.com/archives/X11-users/2007/Dec/msg00496.html tells me that that's an incompatibility with my X11.app; I'll report a separate bug with a fix if and when I find a solution.
