Upgrade of atlas on MBP running MAC OS X 10.5.8 (9L30) fails

When trying to upgrade outdated ports using the following commands, an error occurs and the upgrade is stopped:

$ sudo port -v selfupdate
...

The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you should run
  port upgrade outdated

I should mention a temporary fix would be to roll back binutils to 2.19.

I've opened a new ticket here for binutils: #22681
