openssl 0.9.8n build failure on Snow Leopard undefined symbols linking against zlib

Description
Running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I had not updated MacPorts for a while before the update to 10.6.3 so I can't tell if that was a causative factor.
I tried following the migration guidelines and ended up delting /opt/local and trying with a brand new install of MacPorts, installing, sync and upgrade, then installed zlib and then openssl, also tried the same thing letting openssl bring in the install of zlib. Same error each time.
I'm attaching the output from trying the install again after doing a clean of openssl.

User error - I had stuff in /usr/local that was interfering. Renaming /usr/local allowed the install to work. Sorry about that. I don't see an option for me to close this ticket, so whoever can close it is invalid, please do so.
