Replying to gmosne@…:
sudo port install imagemagick -v ---> Computing dependencies for ImageMagickError: Internal error: port lookup failed: too many nested evaluations (infinite loop?) Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.
I got this same error! What I did to get this error: rm -rf /opt, install Macports fresh, installed some ports I use for Ruby on Rails, then I tried "sudo port install ImageMagick" and got the exact error message above.

i have a new snow leopard install fresh out of the wrapper (crashed disk swapped out; time machine restore; no macports on install) same problems i've poked through the dependent packages and it *seems* to me there is some dependency chain that ImageMagick depends on that is a problem like this:
"python26" ==> "tk" ==> "Xft2" ==>"xrender" ==> "xorg-libX11" ==> "xorg-libxcb" ==> "xorg-xcb-proto" ==> "python26" ==> ...
