h4h5tools fails to install universal variant

$ sudo port install h4h5tools +universal
--->  Computing dependencies for h4h5tools
Error: Cannot install h4h5tools for the arch(s) 'i386 x86_64' because
Error: its dependency hdf5 does not build for the required arch(s) by default
Error: and does not have a universal variant.
Error: Unable to execute port: architecture mismatch

The hdf5 dependency does not have a universal variant, but hdf5-18 does. But even if it did then there is probably still #29437.
