(This is embarrassing)
In the distant past, I contributed some code to PLIB, to support joysticks on Mac OS-X, as part of working on FlightGear. Unfortunately, I managed to include a bug, which for some reason has become more prominent in recent builds - it never showed up for several years. In the mean-time, PLIB has gone into stasis, such that getting a new PLIB release made is problematic.
As a result, the easiest way to get the bug fixed in the short term, would be to add a patch via the Portfile. If / when a PLIB 1.8.6 is ever release, this patch (and, I guess, the other two) can be dropped.
