Xcode not found when user directory is not on main drive

I have my user directory on a different drive than the OS (10.7). xcode installs without any problems and I can start it.
I downloaded the 10.7 installer and it seems to run OK.
When I run
sudo port -v selfupdate
it runs OK.
When I run
sudo port upgrade outdated
every package gets this message:
Warning: Xcode does not appear to be installed; most ports will likely fail to build.
xcode is in Macintosh HD/Applications and my user directory is in mce/mjc
What do I need to adjust to have ports know where xcode is, and is there anything else I need to do?

I don't see any reason why the location of your home directory should matter. Ensure you have Xcode installed, and that you have installed the Xcode command line tools (from within the Xcode application's Preferences window's Downloads section), and that you have used xcode-select to select the location of your Xcode.
