gimp: only able to open xcf files

Whenever I try to open an image in gimp I get an error saying that it's an "Unknown file type", on all files expect for .xcf files?

I'm seeing this problem occur after upgrading to gimp 2.8.14 (previously had 2.8.10 installed). No file types are recognized outside of .xcf. I tried the brute force method of blowing out all gimp components (uninstall --follow-dependents gimp2) and reinstalling but no success. No errors during the port install, no errors in launching via gimp-app (although it takes a long time to "Query new Plug-ins" on launch). When I launch "gimp" from Terminal I get this message many times but it may be unrelated: (gimp:32501): LibGimpBase-WARNING : gimp: gimp_wire_read(): error

Perhaps this is just a config issue?
