Currently, there is a know issue that prevents from building gsl +optimize on AVX-capable machines. I think the universal-variant issue should be filed as a different ticket, but the architecture (0xce ...) that the attached logfile (l.1015) says is somewhat strange and there would be another cause.
David, could you tell us more detail of your machine and your setup? Also, I would like to know your output of file /opt/local/lib/libgslcblas.dylib.

I was unable to build gsl +gcc47 +optimize +universal, but gsl +gcc47 +universal. I think this is a problem of gsl. The library is i386 rather than universal.
