#45478 closed update (wontfix)

Update request: New version of iStumbler available (122 vs 99)

Reported by: whmagill Owned by: stuartwesterman (Stuart Westerman)
Priority: Normal Milestone:
Component: ports Version:
Keywords: Cc: kurthindenburg (Kurt Hindenburg)
Port: istumbler

Description

Mac Ports installs iStumbler version 99. When "check for updates" runs, a pop-up with a special yellow box indicates that a new update (122) is available, but that version 99 users need to download it explicitly.

Both work. Version 122 has several enhancements.

It appears that iStumbler went from BSD license, to closed source and costs $20. It is also being distributed with .dmg. I'm not sure what to do here.

It looks like 99 is the last release with source. Typically, you can try to patch the 99 to remove the 'Check for updates' to avoid confusing users.

I'm still not sure what to do here. It looks like the download site points to a zipped .app. I'm not sure how to patch release 99 to remove the 'Check for updates'.

Removing the check for updates is easy, but then users might be confused why it is missing or not working. New users should be informed of newer versions, costs, etc., which seems appropriate with the check for updates. Perhaps explanation could be provided as 'notes' in the portfile?

The problem here is that iStumbler is not open source software anymore. Again, I don't know what to do. As you mentioned, removing the check for updates is not much of a fix.

It is an unusual situation, but clearly any release after 99 is closed source and cannot be supported via MacPorts. This is simply a best effort - release 99 can continue with that understanding. My suggestion is providing explanation via 'notes' if you are so inclined; otherwise, there is really not much else to do.

As I see it, we should treat the project as if it were abandoned and remove it entirely. I don’t see a point in providing an outdated version forever. This is an uncommon situation, though, so you might want to ask macports-dev for additional opinions.

I agree with this. I'll ask to have the port removed entirely.
