namely_void's patch contains a patch to patch-Makefiles. I independently (whoops, have to check bugzilla first) came up with the same fix, so I can verify that it works for 1.4.0.

I'm afraid I'll make an error here in applying this. Would you mind providing a replacement patch file for patch-Makefiles by itself rather than a patch for the previous patch?

Committed. Thanks! Also reset maintainer to generic. Bryan do you want to maintain the port? If not perhaps Stephen might want to since he's filed Bugs 10425 & 10483 against git-core. Also, is it ok to add git-core a dependency of cogito? It has been requested in Bug 7289.
