    1010
11       <p>If you would like to install DarwinPorts, it first needs to be
    12         &ldquo;checked out&rdquo; of the OpenDarwin CVS repository.</p>
11        <p>To install DarwinPorts you first need to download the 1.0 release
     12        package in either <a href="/downloads/DarwinPorts-1.0.tar.bz2">tar.bz2</a>
     13        format or <a href="/downloads/DarwinPorts-1.0.tar.gz">tar.gz</a>. Checksums
14        for both packages are contained <a href="/downloads/DarwinPorts-1.0.chk.txt">here</a>.<p>

1416      <p>Please note that in order to install and run DarwinPorts on Mac OS X, you must

27       <p>Use the following commands to check the project out of the CVS
     29      <h5 class="subhdr">Installation</h5>
     30
31      <p>Once you have downloaded the 1.0 tarball, there are a still a few things
32      you will need to do before you can install a port with the DarwinPorts system,
33      namely installing DarwinPorts itself. &ldquo;<kbd>cd</kbd>&rdquo; into the directory where you downloaded
34      the package and run &ldquo;<kbd>tar xjvf DarwinPorts-1.0.tar.bz2</kbd>&rdquo; or
35      &ldquo;<kbd>tar xzvf DarwinPorts-1.0.tar.gz</kbd>&rdquo;, depending on whether you
36      downloaded the bz2 tarball or the gz one, respectively. This will unpack the DarwinPorts
37      sources that you will proceed to install. To do so, execute the following:</p>
     38
     39      <pre>cd DarwinPorts-1.0
     40./configure && make && sudo make install</pre>
     41
     42        <p>Optionally:</p>
     43
     44<pre>cd ../
     45rm -rf DarwinPorts-1.0.*</pre>
     46
     47      <p>These steps need to be perfomed from an administrator account, for which &ldquo;<kbd>sudo</kbd>&rdquo;
48      will ask the password upon installation. This procedure will install a pristine DarwinPorts
49      system and, if the optional steps are taken, remove the as of now unnecessary DarwinPorts-1.0
50      directory and corresponding tarball. To customize your installation you should read the output
51      of &ldquo;<kbd>./confugure --help | more</kbd>&rdquo; and pass the appropriate options to the
52      configuration script in the steps detailed above.</p>
     53
54        <p>Lastly, you will need to synchronize your recent installation with the OpenDarwin servers
55        and download the &ldquo;Portfiles&rdquo; containing the descriptions necessary for DarwinPorts
56        to install ports on your system:</p>
     57
     58        <pre>sudo port -d selfupdate</pre>
     59
60        <p>Upon completion DarwinPorts will be ready to install ports. It is recommended to run the above
61        command on a regular basis to keep your installation synchronized with the latest changes to the
62        Portfiles and the infrastructure itself.</p>
     63
64      <p>Alternatively, you can refer to the <tt>README_RELEASE1</tt>
65        file contained in the 1.0 release tarball for basic installtion and usage instructions.</p>

67      <p><a href="/help/">Help</a> is also available should you need it.</p>

72     and feature additions, you may acquire the DarwinPorts sources through CVS.</p>
