That's not entirely unexpected. You should be using gcc42 anyway. Why do you want gcc34?

If I may, I will provide an answer. It is stated several times on the Mercury web site and INSTALL files that it will not compile at all under gcc4.0.x, which now comes of course with XCode 3. It is recommended to either roll back to gcc34 or possibly forward to gcc 4.2.x.

Building Mercury on Darwin 9 is a major pain and requires much more work than changing the compiler. The included boehm_gc sources must be upgraded. I managed to compile Mercury but it doesn't work: it just leaks memory like crazy and doesn't do anything.

I will post pointers if I manage to iron out all the kinks.
