#16481 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Trac ticket reporters should not be able to Cc themselves

Description

Commonly trac ticket reporters are mistakenly Ccing themselves on tickets they report. This should be fixed in two ways.

  1. The "CcMe!" button should not appear for the reporter.
  2. Trac should check if any of the emails typed into the Cc: field match the email of the reporter and disallow that. Ideally a message should appear notifying the user that they do not need to Cc themselves.

What's the problem with reporters being on the Cc list? I dont see any value in the extra engineering.

Let me turn it around and hypothetically ask what is the benefit of the ticket reporter being on the Cc list?

So to answer your question, I would argue that it violates the spirit of the Apple human interface guidelines by having a user interface element (the "CCMe!" button in this case) appear when it does not do anything useful. Now the Cc list is cluttered up with an unnecessary entry and thus that makes things less clear. Also, I know I'm not the only ticket editor that removes the reporter from the Cc list. Thus it waste's the time of the editor as well as the reporter to allow it.

In any event, this does not need to be at the top of your list of things to do. :)

As of Trac 1.2 users can configure the type of notifications they want to receive in the preferences.

This also allows users override the old always_notify_reporter = true setting of Trac 1.0. As users can now opt-out of notifications for their reported tickets, having the reporter on the CC list actually has a purpose.

As we are not going to take the proposed action, I am closing this as wontfix.

So now we should not remove report's names from the Cc field. I think that change in procedure warrants an announcement on the dev list; I wouldn't have known that I was supposed to stop doing that if I hadn't received a notification of your comment above.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
