'port -d' stops outputting debug messages on 10.3

It appears that using 'port -d' on 10.3.9 (MacPorts trunk around 2008-11-07) starts off with debug messages, then they stop:

$ port -d destroot
DEBUG: Changing to port directory: /Volumes/Data/blb/macports/trunk/dports/devel/pkgconfig
DEBUG: Changing to port directory: /Volumes/Data/blb/macports/trunk/dports/devel/pkgconfig
--->  Fetching pkgconfig
--->  Verifying checksum(s) for pkgconfig
--->  Extracting pkgconfig
--->  Configuring pkgconfig
--->  Building pkgconfig
--->  Staging pkgconfig into destroot
