If rsync fails during install it gets ugly

Description

I was installing and rsync failed. My internet connection is satellite internet, and the rsync connection failed. I waited a long time but LittleSnitch showed me that there was zero activity going on. I needed to begin again. But at that point the installer offers no cancel option. Choosing to quit the installer only brought up a message about the installer being "busy". I had to force quit the installer. Then when I tried to reinstall it said there already was an installation running and AGAIN I couldn't quit. So I force quit again. Finally after a reboot I could get the installer going again. And guess what? Rsync failed again and again I can't quit or back out any way other than a force quit. I'm done with MacPorts. I know you guys are doing it for free and I appreciate that. But I find the installer unusable. Greg

If you got to the rsync part, MacPorts is installed, it just hasn't synced the ports tree yet. Since rsync seems to be unreliable for you, you could use a different method. Two alternatives are presented at FAQ.

Thank you very much! But my issue is more with the installer. Not having a way to back out other than a force quit is ugly and will be a bigger issue the less savvy the user is. Since a least part of the idea of MacPorts is to make things simpler and doable for the less tech savvy it seems like that's a rough edge you'd want to smooth off.

I don't think there's a lot we can do about Installer.app's behaviour, so maybe this should be reported to Apple. The rest is a duplicate of #18315.
