As of opal@20111221, with port tree synced on 2012-01-14,

> sudo port extract opal

yields

Error: Unable to open port: Port extract failed: tar: Error opening archive: Failed to open '/opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/tarballs/ports/math/opal'
To report a bug, see <http://guide.macports.org/#project.tickets>

The directory is indeed missing in the tree.

There were briefly two ports named opal: http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macports-dev/2012-January/017429.html (so if you were looking for the machine learning library, it's opal-ml now)

The portindex was understandably a bit confused by all this. I made a no-op change to the opal portfile in r88903 to force it to be reindexed.
