This is not a duplicate; this is a new problem.

Angelo Graziosi sent the following transcript by private email:

# Startup items have been generated that will aid in
# starting dbus with launchd. They are disabled

# and to cause them to launch at startup:

# sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.freedesktop.dbus-system.plist
# launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist

This suggests that the problem exists only when users get a pre-compiled binary, not when building from source (which I verified works fine).

Replying to ryandesign@…:

I have a commit with a revbump in the works. I am in the middle of building and testing variant combinations.

Apologies for not acknowledging this earlier.
Is it still an issue?

No, and the +startupitem variant looks like its part of the default now which means it's always installed, so I'll close the ticket.
