Python 2.6 installation fails

Description

I tried installing Python 2.6 (python26) on a new MacPorts installation on MacOS 10.7.3 with XCode 4.2.1, and the installation fails: 

--->  Attempting to fetch python26-2.6.8_0.darwin_11.x86_64.tbz2 from http://packages.macports.org/python26
--->  Attempting to fetch python26-2.6.8_0.darwin_11.x86_64.tbz2.rmd160 from http://packages.macports.org/python26
--->  Installing python26 @2.6.8_0
--->  Activating python26 @2.6.8_0
Error: org.macports.activate for port python26 returned: Image error: /Applications/MacPorts/Python 2.6/Build Applet.app/Contents/Info.plist already exists and does not belong to a registered port.  Unable to activate port python26. Use 'port -f activate python26' to force the activation.
Error: Failed to install python26

Sorry, I had forgotten to remove /Applications/MacPorts before doing a clean install!
