I think this is related to the +cairo variant specifically... I remember disabling just the +cairo variant and then having it work...

Can we close this? The port was touched various times since this ticket and we plan to discontinue this port.

py26-mapnik has been replaced by mapnik, which is now at version 3.0.0-rc1 and builds fine.
