ghostscript-9.10 fails to install on snow leopard (10.6.8)

I had to clean macports and start over today and many of my ports installed fine but not ghostscript. I get the error:

--->  Extracting ghostscript
Error: org.macports.extract for port ghostscript returned: command execution failed
Please see the log file for port ghostscript for details:
    /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_Volumes_a2_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_print_ghostscript/ghostscript/main.log

the key part of the main.log file is

my hunch is that somehow it is a permissions problem related to the no-same-owner flag but i am just guessing. it fails whether i run it as root or using sudo. my other ports installed ok with sudo.
