For some reason the patch is not picked up so I have submitted a new ticket for the same request. I don't have permission to change the ticket assignment. ​http://trac.macports.org/ticket/42566

Lets wait and see, depending on the answer I will fix 3.4 according to the correct procedure.

I would guess, duplicating a ticket is not the right strategy. If a ticket is okay, but not picked up the most promising way to get attention is to ping the developers list. Another think, is if you are the maintainer of the port, you better flag this.

Ticket with "maintainer haspatch" are likely to get more attention as this usually implies little work.
