When I try to install openmpi-default by:

sudo port install -d openmpi-default

it returns the following:

--->  Fetching distfiles for openmpi-default
--->  Verifying checksums for openmpi-default

The log says:

sh: /usr/bin/gnutar: No such file or directory

This means that since upgrading to Mavericks, you haven't reinstalled MacPorts, which you need to do.
