port install surf fails

Description

installation of surf fails generating the attached main.log. this happens under 10.9.2 (Xcode command line tools are installed, `/usr/bin/gcc --version' yields 

Configured with: --prefix=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/c++/4.2.1
Apple LLVM version 5.1 (clang-503.0.40) (based on LLVM 3.4svn)
Target: x86_64-apple-darwin13.1.0
Thread model: posix

another observation, not directly related to the failing install but affecting this port: when compiling `surf' manually (which succeeds) starting the application crashes issuing the error 

XIO:  fatal IO error 35 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server "/tmp/launch-UHHPmM/org.macosforge.xquartz:0"

which apparently pops up with quite some x11 applications (mgrace, gv, ...) currently. any ideas what's causing this?
