emacs hangs when executing 'gnus'

Description

emacs 24.3 (9.0), OS X 10.9.3. Executing "M-x gnus" emacs hangs indefinitely, and I need to execute "Force quit". Selecting menu "Tools -> Read net news (gnus)" emacs hangs in the same way.

Sounds like an upstream issue to me... Is there anything that makes you think that this is macports-specific? If not, have you reported this upstream yet?

No, I didn't report upstream; I opened a ticket because this happened just after the last MacPorts update.

Is somebody willing to help? I have the last gnus stable version; the last emacs version has been released in 2013 and has worked correctly with gnus until the recent macports upgrade for emacs. So, the fault must be related to macports in some way. Maintainer, please, some words to comment?
