I get the following message: Error: port gcc48 not found

The port certainly exists. Please try "sudo port -v selfupdate", then try installing gcc48 again. If it still fails, let us know if selfupdate produced any errors.

Any luck getting this to work?

Searching the Available Ports page on "gcc4" shows gcc42 but no other gcc ports. It seems that gcc43 through gcc49 are all missing now.

Some ports were missing from the ports page due to #40946, but this was a web site issue only and would not have affected using MacPorts on the command line.
