BTW, I've contacted the maintainer of the macports for ilmbase and openexr and have filed upgrade tickets for both to get them up to date. He'll be working on upgrading both versions to 2.2.0

Oh, somehow I thought openexr was only used to provide hdri support (which we can't do as per #43754).
