self update failed - failed to verify signature for MacPorts source!

Today I cannot update MacPort base I run MacPorts under El Capitan

$ port version
Version: 2.3.4

$ sudo port -v selfupdate

this is happening on two machines, one on yosemite, the other mavericks. out of nowhere. i even tried reinstalling on the mavericks machine and wiping every port i had and it's still happening! i can't think of any correlation... maybe Xcode 7.0.1?

Same issue here: OS X 10.11 El Capitan, MacPorts 2.3.4.
