MyPaint @1.2.0 Application will not open

Reported by: b8a9d72c@… Owned by: ryandesign (Ryan Carsten Schmidt)
Priority: Normal Milestone:
Component: ports Version: 2.3.4
Keywords: Cc:
Port: MyPaint

Description (last modified by mf2k (Frank Schima))

I have just installed MyPaint for Mac OS but the application will not open.

I am running Mac OS 10.11.4 on an iMac with Xcode 7.2.

I installed MyPaint version 1.2.0.

There were no error messages.

Steps that I took:

  1. Installed MyPaint application to Mac.
  2. MyPaint application was successfully installed via MacPorts into my Applications folder.
  3. Clicked the MyPaint application, it began to bounce in the dock but the program did not open.
  4. After a couple of bounces MyPaint eventually closed itself and the application icon disappeared from the dock.
  5. I tried to reopen MyPaint and got the same results each time.

Thank you for your help with this issue.

Have you installed py27-pyobjc-cocoa? If not, do:

sudo port install py27-pyobjc-cocoa

See #48849.

Replying to ryandesign@…:

Have you installed py27-pyobjc-cocoa? If not, do:

sudo port install py27-pyobjc-cocoa

See #48849.

I have done what you advised and installed py27-pyobjc-cocoa.

Now when MyPaint attempts to open (icon bouncing up and down in the dock), X11 also attempts to start. However I get the following error message from X11:

An error occurred while starting the X11 server: "Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running". Click Quit to quit X11. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.

If I click Quit the process automatically and continuously repeats itself.

If I then force quit MyPaint to get it to leave the dock, I am able to force quit the application. However, I cannot quit nor force quit X11. It just keeps on trying to open. I think I might have to shutdown my computer.

I noticed a patch in #48849 do you wish me to install the patch?

Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

It finally works.

I forced shutdown the computer. Rebooted. Realized that I did not have the latest version of X11. I had version 2.7.7 and updated to version 2.7.8.

Afterwards I was able to open MyPaint. I did some quick tests and it seems like it works fine.

The only 2 little glitches that I found was that while using MyPaint the icon continues to bounce up and down in the dock. Also after saving, quitting and reopening MyPaint it considered that my last sessions crashed despite my properly quitting the application.

Thanks again for your help and support. I will do more tests later one when I get home from work.
