Sorry, I don't use emacs-app. I have updated emacs-mac-app to 25.1 since that's what I normally use.

emacs-mac-app is based on Carbon Emacs. Hasn't Carbon Emacs been deprecated in favor of Emacs.app (the Cocoa/NextStep port)? I always assumed emacs-mac-app was a relic and emacs-app was the official Emacs for Mac.

That must be an older name clash. emacs-mac-app is basically emacs-app with Mitsuharu's patches that haven't been applied upstream. It fixes some papercuts with using retina screens, adding multi-touch gesture events.

Any reason not to merge emacs-app into the emacs portfile as a subport? Seems like there's a lot of duplication between the two, and that ought to make it easier to maintain.

Replying to drkp:

It is useful to be able to install the console/X11 version, in addition to the Cocoa version of emacs. Not sure if a subport allows both to be installed at the same time.

It would still be possible -- there shouldn't be any user-visible changes.

Greetings:

I just opened #52831 which may be benefitted from emacs-app getting updated as well.

Kind regards, Anthony

https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/36 has a proposed patch for moving emacs-app and emacs-app-devel into subports of emacs, and getting them updated. Does this look ok, Hiroshi?

Resolution: fixed

I merged this PR in https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/commit/e7869a0e0636b6ab2069d1466f86c2834b739805 after noting that the port is abandoned.
