Do you have an opinion as to which +ruby variant should be the default? Seems like 1.8.7 is pretty old by now ... I don't use Ruby, but I do use swig-python & swig-octave ...

In f5f0c673/macports-ports:

swig-ruby: add +ruby24 variant; addresses ticket # #53430 .

For right now - my personal preference would have ruby24 to be the default. Perhaps others would prefer ruby23, but I doubt that.

Are you sure swig-ruby must be version-dependent...? Are you doing different things based on whether it's ruby23 or ruby24?

Oh yes.

On the other hand, a few more years, and #57650 could be closed too. :-)
