angband @4.1.3+x11: X Error of failed request: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)

Description

angband installed with the +x11 variant does not launch for me on macOS High Sierra: 

$ angband 
X Error of failed request:  BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)
  Major opcode of failed request:  17 (X_GetAtomName)
  Atom id in failed request:  0x0
  Serial number of failed request:  21
  Current serial number in output stream:  21

In 0762f54da03bf8e0b0d914573a596012fc17db8e/macports-ports (master):

angband: update to 4.2.1

  • Most patches from the previous version are now incorporated into the

upstream source. A few MacPorts overrides remain for Makefile.osx.

  • Upstream update fixes X11 variant (-aqua +x11) but is not very

playable with terrible screen redraw rates. Did not investigate
this further.
