#58521 new defect

Cannot successfully start MySQL 5.6 after upgrading to 5.6.44

Description

I recently upgraded to 5.6.44 and then found that I couldn't start the database server using mysqld_safe. It starts and then just ends. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything useful in the logs or more information when I try using commands directly.

I did uninstall the port, remove all the folders and try and again with the same result.

5.7 works fine but is causing me problems for other reasons so I'd like to stick with 5.6 if possible.

MySQL 5.6 ended support for macOS early (2018-10-19, whereas other platforms are supported until 2021-02). I don't know if that alone could be the cause of this issue, but the upstream recommendation is to upgrade to 5.7 or higher.
