    33/usr/bin/bsdtar --hfsCompression generates a ton of errors; /opt/local/bin/bsdtar (libarchive-3.4.2_0) works fine.

     5edit: I see, some suspicion that libarchive 3.4.2 may be broken on 10.14. I'll poke around in a VM to see if I can repro that.
