but checksums pxlib-0.6.8.tar.gz which is dated Jan 13 and it is /opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/pxlib

I can confirm the checksum mismatch when downloading from http://newcontinuum.dl.sourceforge.net/project/pxlib/pxlib/0.6.8/
SourceForge lists 0.6.8 as having been modified 2019-11-22 but we updated our port to 0.6.8 on 2018-08-23 so a stealth update must have occurred. Comparing the old version of the file that we had mirrored in 2018 to the new file from 2019, there are over 15,000 lines of changes, primarily due to regenerating the autotools files with a newer version of automake.

Near as I can tell, it is not finding the tarball. http://pxlib.sourceforge.net seems to think that 0.6.6 is current pxlib version. I tried installing other of the gnumeric dependencies and got other errors. Foolish me, I upgraded to big sur, so I am in the process of rebuilding evarything.
