    1 After five years in MacPorts, lots of work on octave, and lots of work on gcc, I have not the slightest idea what the difference might be between the +gfortran variant and the +gcc11 variant.

    3 God knows how a casual user might know.

    5 We need to go through a lot of these ports and cut out a large amount of cryptical, confusing cruft.
