It's unclear to me why it's necessary to override CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS in configure.args at all, or mess with the archflags. Why can't the define simply be appended to configure.cppflags?

Using
configure.cc_archflagsunconditionally would break +universal everywhere, not just on 10.6.
