    1 Local clients appear to be okay. Remote clients display black for the menu bar. The items appear to be clickable, but they bring up empty selection boxes.
    2 Also, the "-bg color" appears to be ignored for remote clients, but again is okay for local ones.

     32026-02-23 update: Background behavior depends on remote emacs version:
     4 26.3 always displays a white background,
     5 27.2 accepts explicit "-bg <color>" but ignores *background in .Xdefaults
