#73916 new defect

wine-stable doesn't install on a brand new Tahoe M5 due to python313 +lto+optimizations+universal fetch and build errors

Port: wine-stable python313

Description

Hello fam, I've been banging my head against this problem for a moment and it doesn't look like anyone out there is running into an easily findable similar issue.

First port installed on a brand new installation of Macports on a fresh M5 Mac Book Pro. I installed xcode command line tools and when installing wine-stable it fails saying (in short):

Thanks!

The fetch failures are normal. It's failing to fetch a pre-built archive of python313 with the universal variant. We often don't have pre-built archives with the universal variant. It's not a problem. MacPorts will build from source on your system.

The build from source is failing. That's a problem. /usr/bin/make is getting killed. This can happen on Apple Silicon machines when binaries are not signed properly. This might happen for example if your /usr/bin/make is leftover from an Intel system, where signing was not enforced. You didn't attach the main.log or show the top lines that say what version of Xcode and the command line tools you have installed; one or both might be outdated. In particular, there are known situations where you don't get notified by Software Update if your command line tools are outdated.

Please try ProblemHotlist#reinstall-clt. Then sudo port clean python313 before trying to install wine again.

From the archive names, I see you're on Darwin 25, which is macOS 26, so you should be using Xcode 26.x and command line tools 26.x. If you don't have Xcode 26.x, update that as well.

This is a brand new machine and I purposefully didn't migrate my user from the last machine to limit the legacy cruft. I literally cracked the box open and fresh from the welcome screen installed macports and tried to install wine.

I have started again, updated the OS all the way, installed the most bleeding edge xCode and reinstalled CLT. I port cleaned before i port installed python313, and it is still crashing, but now with an exit code 2. I have attached the most recent Main.log for this event.

I appreciate your help with this!

Trace mode also doesn't currently work on Apple Silicon.

Replying to jmroot:

Trace mode also doesn't currently work on Apple Silicon.

Ah, I didn't realize we hadn't released that yet. I saw #66358 was fixed two weeks ago and thought it might've been included in last week's release of MacPorts 2.12.5.

So yes, please sudo port clean python313 and then try your wine installation again, this time omitting the -t flag.

Last time I tried the installation (see attached main.log) I didn't run it in trace mode and that is when it failed building again but under seemingly different circumstances.

Ah yes, the log says:

:info:build /opt/local/include/expat_config.h:1:1: error: expected identifier or '('
:info:build 1 | !<arch>
:info:build | ^

Your expat port has installed a broken header file because of #73796.
