virt-viewer: unable to connect to remote guests through SPICE protocol

Description
When attempting to connect to a remote VM guest that lives on a separate virtualization host machine, virt-viewer gives this error message:
Failed to connect: Unsupported graphic type 'spice'
Even though the spice-gtk port is listed as a dependency of the virt-viewer port, it seems that recent builds of the virt-viewer port may not be getting compiled with SPICE protocol support enabled.
This issue appeared when I upgraded my machine from macOS 13 Ventura to macOS 15 Sequoia, around six months ago. virt-viewer was working fine under Ventura; but after completely removing MacPorts, upgrading to Sequoia, and then re-installing MacPorts from scratch, I started getting the error message shown above. So I don't know whether the issue is with the virt-viewer port on Sequoia specifically, or whether the problem lies with the virt-viewer port itself and it was just a coincidence that the port stopped working at the same time that I happened to upgrade macOS.
I can say with certainty that the issue is not with my virtualization host or the VMs living on that host. If I spin up a Debian VM using VirtualBox, I am able to use virt-manager from inside the Debian VM to connect to the VMs living on the virtualization host without any problems.
One other piece of information: I am using the virt-viewer command from the command line to initiate my remote connections, e.g.:
virt-viewer --direct --connect qemu+ssh://username@hostname/session vmname
