desktop-file-utils 0.15_0 cannot be activated

On an intel iMac using 10.5.2 I have seen this error:

--->  Activating desktop-file-utils 0.15_0
Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: shell command "/opt/local/bin/update-desktop-database /opt/local/share/applications" returned error 1
Command output: No directories in update-desktop-database search path could be processed and updated.

Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

However, if I try to install it again, it appears to be just fine:

Macintosh:~ stephan$ sudo port install desktop-file-utils
Skipping org.macports.activate (desktop-file-utils ) since this port is already active
--->  Cleaning desktop-file-utils
