Look at the explanation given here:
​http://www.erlang.org/pipermail/erlang-patches/2008-July/000258.html. This enhancement may be included in some later Erlang release, but currently it would help couchdb a lot (there have been several reports of database corruptions due to this feature).

The patch is fairly easy to apply, but is there any easy way to confirm it is working as expected?
