Building mpich on Darwin 10.4.11, I get success and the following warning: 

--->  Staging mpich into destroot
Warning: violation by /opt/local/logfiles
Warning: mpich violates the layout of the ports-filesystems!
Warning: Please fix or indicate this misbehavior (if it is intended), it will be an error in future releases!
--->  Installing mpich @1.2.7p1_0
