poppler, gd2, gtk - build failure on Snow Leopard, breaks libXdmcp

Hi, was using gnuplot, tried to install poppler, poppler build failed and broke gnuplot. Sordid tale below.

Touche. You're right - although, in a bind (in the middle of a work week) tracing back through port -d and installing +universal versions of xorg-libs works.
