#22598 closed defect (invalid)

when pressing enter after entering "Sudo port selfupdate" via x11 or terminal cursor placed in wrong place to enter password

Description (last modified by jmroot (Joshua Root))

As part of the macports install I entered the command sudo port selfupdate as per instructions. The system returns "Password:". I cannot enter a password due to the cursor being placed one spot to the left of where it should be. I cannot arrow, tab, place cursor in correct spot either in a x11 shell or a terminal shell. I then try to get a correct input to enter my password by simply hitting enter but it still does not allow me to and sends the "password incorrent, try again" and places the cursor in the same spot.

I am on mac os 10.4.?. The install of x11 was done via my mac os startup disk 1 as per instructions without incident. Here is what happens:

dave-scidas-computer:~ davescida$ sudo port selfupdate
Password:

The cursor is placed too close to the ":" and I cannot move it over to type in my password.

Have you tried just typing your password + return?

Thanks for responding and yes I have. I just typed my password and pressed enter. It responded with the invalid password response and said try again. I did again with the same result. I did it one more time and it failed again, but this time it kicked me out because of too many tries. I even tried the complete command again with same result. I thought that maybe I could enter the password with the selfupdate command, but it did not recognize this and simply did exactly what it did the first time.

Please help. I really want to use GIMP, which is why I am doing this in the first place. It was recommended that I use macports to install GIMP because it would be easy, which it probably is IF I could get macports installed.

Thanks. I look forward to your response. Dave.

The password is being requested by sudo, so if there's a bug, it's not with MacPorts. Also, JFYI: http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html

OK. So what is the bug with then? What is SUDO part of? I'm a photographer not a computer person.

There's no indication of a bug here, just sounds like you're entering an incorrect password.

or the user account isn't in the admin group...

Toby. YOU CANNOT ENTER A PASSWORD. That is my point. The cursor does not move as you type and I know the password. The same password works fine in all other cases as well as the cursor placement.

The user being in the admin group or not makes more sence. Stupid question. How do I know what user is being used or does system change user somehow?

Replying to paldusty@…:

The cursor does not move as you type and I know the password.

This is expected, the cursor isn't supposed to move when you type your password.

Really. Ok then. I am the only "human" user. Do some of these apps change user or become a user and I have to give permissions somehow? Maybe that is it if when enetering a password the cursor doesn't move. Thanks.
