giflib +universal variant won't build, keeps mono from installing

Description
I am trying to install Mono on Snow Leopard (currently running 10.6.4) with an up-to-date copy of MacPorts and an up-to-date port tree. One of the dependencies is the +universal variant of giflib. Standard giflib builds fine, but the +universal variant fails with this error:
Error: Target org.macports.destroot returned: /opt/local/lib/libgif.la differs in /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_graphics_giflib/work/destroot-i386 and /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_graphics_giflib/work/destroot-x86_64 and cannot be merged
As a result, I can't install Mono (using MacPorts, anyway). Full log is attached.

Please remember to cc the maintainer. Normally this means one of the dependencies is not universal.

And indeed, your log shows that xorg-libsm is not universal.
Full log
