There are probably dozens of prior reports of this problem in the issue tracker and on the mailing list, but we were never able to satisfactorily determine the cause. The best guess was incorrect/incomplete Migration. Could that be it in your case as well?

I was trying to follow the advice given in the #28536 ticket, and I indeed happened to solve my problem by installing perl5.10, and then uninstalling perl5.8.

I don't understand why, but I had to --force macports to uninstall perl5.8 :

% sudo port uninstall perl5.8
--->  Unable to uninstall perl5.8 5.8.9_4+universal, the following ports depend on it:
--->      perl5
Error: port uninstall failed: Please uninstall the ports that depend on perl5.8 first.

% sudo port -f uninstall perl5.8

This just bit me when I tried to do an upgrade outdated. There was a perl5.8 to 5.12 upgrade that seems to have caused the problem. You should be able to solve this.

A fast workaround (depending on what packages you have installed is to do an uninstall/reinstall of p5-locale-gettext and dependendcies. help2man doesn't have many packges that depend on it:

port echo depends:help2man

For me, the only thing using it was autoconf, so I just uninstalled autoconf, help2man, and p5-locale-gettext

Then, I reinstalled autoconf (and the latest p5-locale-gettext and help2man installed fine):

port install autoconf

#21069 and #12336 are the tickets that all the rest were duped to, FTR. The former is about mismatched architectures, i.e. the user switched to Snow Leopard without following the Migration instructions. The latter is about conflicting headers in /usr/local.

The third way to make p5-locale-gettext fail to work is to install it against e.g. perl5.8 and then switch to another version, e.g. perl5.12.

Just FYI, my problem with this was because I upgraded Perl to 5.12 but I neglected to upgrade the packages p5-* that depended on them.

resulted in:

therefore, what worked was:

sudo port uninstall p5-locale-gettext
